A multi-purpose, versatile tool that very nearly everyone in the Mass Effect universe utilizes, the omni-tool is something that has become pretty vital to everyday life. It has a variety of uses, which makes it useful to both civilians as well as military personnel for a number of reasons.

O It is a device worn on the user's wrist that is a combination of a microcomputer, mini-facturing fabricator and sensor analysis pack. It is both versatile and reliable, and can be used to perform such tasks as hacking, decryption or repair.
O Its most common appearance is that of an orange hologram that sheaths the user's hand and/or forearm - occasionally both - and has a highly responsive interface that allows a simple tap or swipe of the user's fingertips to navigate its menus.
O Aside from being useful for a variety of other reasons, the omni-tool (as of Mass Effect 3) has the ability to be used as a melee weapon. The most well-recognized version of this is called an "omni-blade" - a disposable silicon-carbide weapon that is flash-forged by the mini-fabricator. The blade itself is transparent, nearly diamond-hard, is created and suspended within its own mass effect field that, thankfully, is kept away from the user's skin. There are warning lights that illuminate the field that assures the blade only comes into contact with what it's supposed to - which would be whatever the user is directing it at.
O Other soldiers - those that are more technically adept - sometimes choose to modify their omni-tools in different ways. Some choose to maximize stopping power through thermal, electrical or kinetic energy while others integrate the weapon with kinetic barriers which effectively turns turns the tool into a wrist-mounted bludgeon. Others still utilize flammable gases held in place by - again - a mass effect field and ignited on impact.
